The dock on Bull Island, starting point of many an island adventure.
-Capt. Wil
We can’t wait for this weekend’s Beach Drop on Bulls Island!
For the first time since the 1960’s, the Dominick House on Bulls Island is allowing overnight stays on the island! This is very exciting for us, as today the the start of the first trip!
Chris and Weatherly are leading a group of 10 people to search for alligators, identify and observe some of the 293 bird species, seek loggerhead sea turtle tracks in the sand, and gain a greater appreciation for the ecosystem of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.
Joe and Margaret Moffit, pictured here, were the last innkeepers of the Dominick House. Mostly fishermen stayed in the house, and there are stories of epic fish caught in the island’s freshwater impoundments. This picture is from 1953, and they are with their foster fawn.
A lot has changed on the island since the 50’s….Hurricane Hugo, rising sea levels and erosion. But the island is still the natural wonder that it was then. And we are so excited to share it.
Camping, hiking and kayaking on an uninhabited barrier island? Yes, please.
The best field trip a middle schooler could ask for? Definitely yes.
